Introduction

Wonder Girls is the only K-pop group that I am fanboying on. They are also the only girl group that I became a fan of. I'm not really that much into K-pop before I discovered the Wonder Girls because, first of all, I can't enjoy a song in a foreign language that I do not speak or understand. I also do not follow any musician or artist except for the two female singers (one is a famous american blonde bombshell and the other is a member of a Norwegian  duo group) that I used to had a very huge crush on back in my high school days. I was just a casual music listener that enjoy songs for a while without having any interest at it's artist/s and will eventually forget it as time pass by.

Back then, my addiction is only focused on arcade/computer games and anime (japanese cartoons). My obsession to anime was a very serious one to the point that it affected the way I draw pictures (I am gifted with the talent for drawing) and went as far as choosing animation as my career ambition. My love for anime made me appreciate J-pop music which led me to discovering the existence of an asian girl group, the Wonder Girls.

The phenomenal virus breakout

It was around the month of October in 2009 when I heard the song 'Nobody' for the first time. I was strolling at a shopping mall with a friend, looking for Capcom and anime gashapons that could be added to my fast growing collection of expensive figurines (I used to be a hardcore otaku).  Suddenly the mall sound speakers are blaring this catchy  song that made people singing and dancing along with it. I was also surprised that my friend started singing "I want NOBODY, NOBODY but you!" pointing his right hand index finger upwards, swinging it like saying NO then points on me then rapidly claps twice before pointing both his index fingers on me again. I told him "Hey man, what are you doing? Cut it out would you? You're freaking me out!" but he doesn't seem to hear me, he kinda look funny doing that clap-clap-point dance step whenever the "nobody nobody but you" part comes in. When I looked around, I also saw a lot of people doing the same dance step. I felt like a total noob because it seemed to me that everybody knows the song and I'm the only one who looked clueless about it. I was like "What the hell is this?! The song is too damn catchy!" Though I wasn't sure that time whether the artist group is singing in english or in part-english-part-japanese. My friend told me that the song is the current dance craze in the country and is popular among the local variety shows. He said the artist group is japanese which made me think it's j-pop. He chuckled "Where in the earth are you living? on top of the mountains?" well, I can't help it because I rarely watch TV shows (except anime) and haven't listened to the radio for ages. As I've said before, I am just addicted  to anime and games. Though I gotta admit that I instantly did liked that song.

My encounter with that song did not end there for that day. We parted ways to head back to our homes that afternoon. I decided to hail a taxi because it was raining outside. The taxi driver was tuning in to a local radio station that aired that viral Nobody song around half way of my comfortable trip. This time, I get to hear the song clearly and had the chance to focus on the voices of the group members. The ones that got much of my attention were the voices of the one who sings the pre-chorus parts and the other one that sings the first half chorus parts and the high note bridge part. The two voices has a huge contrast from each other and hearing it one after the other is kinda interesting, the one with a cute wee voice and the another one with a thick rich voice, you can tell that she's a good singer by how she easily shift her pitch from middle to low to high.  I was thinking of anime characters singing it and imagined Ingrid of Capcom singing the cute wee pre-chorus part, Morrigan singing the chorus and bridge, Chunli sings the second half of chorus parts, Cammy on the stanzas and Psylocke doing the rap parts. I had a nice laugh with my imagination LOL! I realized that the song already grew inside my head and played on it again and again for the rest of my trip.

 Encounter with the virus-carrying video

When I finally reached home, I decided to search the song on the internet. The only thing that I can type on google search bar is the "I want nobody nobody but you" line. The first result is a YouTube video with the title "{HQ} Wonder Girls - Nobody [MV]" so I clicked on it and watched. The video is of bad quality even if the title says "HQ" then this asian male singer was the first to appear, I was like "Maybe I got the wrong result" I was about to click on the 'Back' button when the scene switched to backstage showing the guy rehearsing the song while his attractive backup lady dancers are being choreographed by an older lady. It made me curious about the MV and decided to continue watching. The part where he was unable to get out of a cubicle after taking a dump (or leaving a dump? lol) due to shortage of toilet paper had me laughing so hard! He ought to be performing on stage on that very time and yet he's stuck inside the restroom LOL! The managers panic and had the backup dancer ladies to perform instead. When the music started, I recognized the familiar beats and I was like "OMG This is the SONGGGG!!! I FOUND IT!!!" but then my excitement turned to confusion again when I realized they were singing in an accented english. I wasn't aware that they have two versions of that song during that time.  I was in the middle of that thinking when I was stunned by what I just saw! I clicked the 'Pause' button to take a good look at it.

Oh my...!!! She looks so gorgeous!!! (Thank you Samsung for the HD video!) After about 5 minutes of starring at this at her beauty, my senses got back to me and resume on playing the video. XD

It turned out that she is the one behind the voice that got my attention from the second time I heard this song (that was on the taxi) Her voice sounds so good to me, I can't stop replaying that part when she sing the first half of the chorus. I clicked the 'pause' button again to take a look at this one:

and... and... and this one too!!!

wonder girls nobody mv screenshot yenny yeeun ye eun

oh my...!!! this is bad!!! I can't stare away! It was like my eyeballs are glued to my computer screen! Ahhh!!!

She is my very first asian celebrity crush! After about an hour of replaying and pausing this short part over and over (believe me, there is no exaggeration  about that), I went on to watch the rest of the MV.

Needless to say, my first encounter with the group is so impressive and I became a hard-core fanboy of that beautiful girl who caught my attention. I like that they are all pretty and sexy to me. They are so far the best girl-group I had ever seen. Their dance steps is easy to learn, their voices are good, their song is so catchy and is perfect to become a phenomenal anthem, their body movements are in sync and it's fun watching them. I also mistaken this girl to be Sandara Park (Dara is Philippines' National Krung-krung):

But it turned out that she is not Sandara. Sandara is famous in my country because she was once a teen star and is known for her out of world weird antics XD.

Finding the Mysterious Beautiful Culprit

My frustration to know the name of the member that attracted me led me to knowing the Kpop world. I was surprised upon reading that they are Koreans, and not Japanese artists like my friend told me. I watched the video again to see if they really looked Korean to me... well, I find it hard to differentiate the looks between Japanese, Korean and Chinese people. XD

I really like the retro concept of the Nobody video and I watched this MV (in bad quality during that time) over and over, almost everyday... and never did I get tired of it.  Another part of both the MV and song that became one of my favorite is this:

wonder girls nobody mv screenshot

Her majesty looks like a queen in that group formation. This is the bridge part where my crush sings the high note! She did not sing that much high on the english version of this song. The korean version is a lot better. I always got a thing for female singers that has an amazing voice with a face that suits my taste. So, after watching this MV, I begun searching for the Wonder Girls on the internet.  I found out that the name of my crush is Park YeEun and her english name is Yenny. The one who I mistaken for Dara is named Sohee. During that time, I had a hard time remembering the names of the other three members and which is which.

Investigating the Origins of the Virus

On my searching quest, I discovered the korean version MV which unfortunately, is uploaded in a poor resolution quality worse than the english version (I still haven't find the HD video for Nobody Korean version up to this time :(   ...does anyone have it? Please I need it so bad!). Then I stumble  on their MV for 'Tell Me.' The song is also catchy and as impressive as Nobody but the video is far differnt from the identical outfits of the girls for Nobody.

Tell Me MV highlights each members unique personalities with Sohee being the main star of the video as she plays the super hero role that looked like Wonder Woman (or Wonder Girl?) but I felt quite a bit sad because YeEun's hair and outfit looked too old compared to the chick appearance of her mates. I was even a bit unsure if she really is my queen because even her voice in that song doesn't sound like the one she has on Nobody. Anyway, this vid helped me to distinguish which member is which and finally memorized their names.

I was surprised to learn that Sunye is the leader because I used to believe that Yubin, the tanned skin rapper is the head of the group. No offense to Sunye's fans but I thought Yubin commands with authority the most judging  by the way she project herself and she look like the most mature and oldest member. That actually changed as I watched their other videos and live performances that helped me learn more about them, now I am convinced Sunye deserves to be the leader. As for Sunmi, she was the last member that I recognized because she used to be so quiet most of the time. Sunmi's 4-D personality made her popular to the fans. I felt sad when she went on hiatus for her studies because I became fond of all five of them. When Lim joined the group in 2010, I instantly liked her because she sound so good at 2 Different Tears.

I silently admire the group before I created my YouTube channel 'WonderWorldVirus'. I used to have a YT page that was concentrated to anime and gamings (I already forgot my former username) but deleted it on mid-2008 because of my studies and dramatically difficult YT friends. I hate online dramas, it ruins everything. Then I discovered Wonder Girls through the song Nobody and decided to follow them because of my infatuation for Yenny. I planned not to create a YT account anymore and just opted on watching their videos without putting any comments. But it all changed when I witnessed the bond of the group with their fans who call themselves 'Wonderfuls'.

Word War K-pop Edition

I saw how the wonderfuls stand by the group's side during the time when almost every fandom in kpop belittles the Wonder Girls because of their inactivity/hiatus in korea. Wonder Girls lost their popularity to other Kpop groups. Some of the wonderfuls gave up and abandoned the group. Those who were left remained strong even if other fandoms attack them with hateful remarks such as saying that the group failed on their attempt to get in to the US Market and has nothing left for them in korea , which is enough to shaken a fan's loyalty. Those few wonderfuls remained still and held on to their faith, they hold their own against the giant battalion of haters. I've seen how much the wonderfuls suffer in defense of  Wonder Girls. What impressed me about the wonderfuls, they remained mannerful in spite of the evil things thrown upon them. The wonderfuls are indeed the most mannerful fandom in kpop.

Not long after my discovery of Wonder Girls, I also witnessed how Yenny defended her fans against a hater that attacked her on twitter with racist comments filled with insults to the wonderfuls, particularly those from the 3rd world countries which includes my homeland. See the screenshots of their heated exchange of tweets below (cr: allkpop):

MY STORY:

FROM ACQUIRING THE NOBODY VIRUS  TO SPREADING IT ON THE WONDER WORLD

Another incident that showed how big is the heart of the Wonder Girls was when it was reported that members Yenny and Sun prayed for the Philippines during one of the country's worst calamity: Typhoon Ondoy. (Click here to read the full article from allkpop) Those news made me love the foreign group even more... specially Yenny.

Spreading the virus on the Wonder World

November 2012 - The Wonder Girls finally went back to being active again in Korea after the long hiatus period, I was one of those who became so excited as the group will be releasing their 2nd full length album 'Wonder World.'

The album is filled with great music. All of the tracks are done in a creative artistic way, just as critics say, 'Wonder World' is one of the best albums in K-pop. I also dig this album even if I can't fully understand the lyrics of the songs. On that point, I decided to go active again on YouTube to join with the rest of the wonderfuls on cheering up for them through my new channel 'WonderWorldVirus' I obviously named it after the album's title and added the 'virus' part which refers to the 'Nobody' syndrome that got me addicted to the group in the very first place. I wanted to contribute and share my talents to those incredible and wonderful people through my videos, fanarts and now, music remixes.

I think one of my biggest accomplishments as a fellow fan is the artwork I did back in January 2012.

This artwork (I call it 'Wonder Six') is a photoshopped group picture of WG including hiatus member Sunmi with the 'Wonder World' album concept.  I was inspired by the wonderfuls who kept on kept on chanting the names of the six wonder girls "Min Su Ye! Park Ye Eun! Sunmi Jjang! Ahn So Hee! Kim Yoo Bin! Woo Hye Rim! Won-der-girls fighting!!!"

It unexpectedly became famous on the internet to the extent it was featured on the most popular K-pop site allkpop.com! Seeing my artwork on that site made me so proud of myself and I wanted to go wild because of overjoy. That's the feeling when your hardwork receives a lot of attention. But mixed feelings came to me as I read the article. The story made it look like I intended to fool everyone that Sunmi is returning to the group. I was like, "Hey! it was just a fanart to show my support for the all the six members of WG and to cheer up my fellow wonderfuls, there is no pun intended!" I was saddened upon knowing that it actually caused JYPEnt issues about the status of Sunmi and also left some netizens  confused and disappointed about the label's comments on my artwork and stalkapple's. (Click here to read the article on allkpop.com)

Luckily for me, my fanart was not used to further  controversies because of the watermark I placed on the video where I originally posted it.

The positive comments from most netizens about my skills and the fanart made me feel better anyway...

My famous artwork 'Wonder Six':

So... this ends my very long story about my love for the Wonder Girls - the only K-pop group and girl group that I ever follow.

Summary: I am one of Park Yenny's fanboys XD
